Dry condition due to dry and sunny weather/FILE

The country will continue to experience predominantly sunny and dry conditions this week, but with isolated rainfall expected in several regions, the Kenya Meteorological Department has said in its weather outlook for the period February 3 to 9, 2026.

According to the forecast, most parts of the country will remain dry, even as rainfall gradually develops over the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and parts of Western Kenya, particularly in the second half of the week.

Mostly sunny and dry conditions are expected over most parts of the country. However, rainfall is likely to occur in a few to several areas of the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley and Western Kenya as the week progresses,” the department said in the advisory signed by acting Director Edward Muriuki.

The forecast also points to persistently hot daytime conditions in lowland and arid regions.

Daytime (maximum) temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius are expected in several parts of the country, notably the Coast, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.

Counties such as Turkana and Samburu are expected to record sunny intervals during the day with partly cloudy conditions at night, while Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo counties will experience similar hot and dry conditions.

At the Coast, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale counties, sunny intervals are expected during the day with partly cloudy nights, maintaining warm and humid conditions.

In contrast, cooler nights are expected in high-altitude regions.

Night-time (minimum) average temperatures are expected to be less than 10°C in some parts of the Central Highlands, the Central Rift Valley and in the vicinity of Mt. Kilimanjaro,” Muriuki said.

Residents in counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi are advised to prepare for chilly nights, even as daytime conditions remain largely sunny.

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin, including Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori and Narok counties, are expected to experience sunny mornings early in the week, giving way to afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms over a few places later in the period.

KMD data comparing late January periods shows a warming trend in some regions.

Daytime temperatures increased in stations such as Eldoret, Nyahururu and Nakuru, while decreases were recorded in Suba, Kisumu and Kisii.

Night-time temperatures fell in most parts of the country except along the Coast.

Lodwar recorded the highest daily maximum temperature at 38.3°C on February 1, while Nyahururu recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 5.3°C on January 31.

The department has urged Kenyans to stay informed.
