President William Ruto on Monday drew cheers and laughter after joining the dance floor to dance to the Donjo Maber tune during the launch of the Nyota programme in Kisumu county.

The President was seeing vibing to the stage before singer Iyanii joined him, demonstrating a few dance moves that Ruto followed with enthusiasm.

The light moment added colour to the event, with the President visibly enjoying the performance as attendees applauded and laughed.

The Donjo Maber song has swept across Kenya’s digital platforms in recent weeks, driven by its infectious energy.

The phrase “Donjo Maber”, which loosely translates to “enter well” or “come in properly” in Dholuo, became a playful slogan for good vibes and confidence.

Social media users embraced the phrase and choreography, turning it into a TikTok dance phenomenon.

The challenge involves short, high-energy dance routines performed to the track’s chorus, often shared under hashtags like #DonjoMaberChallenge and #DonjoMaberDance.

Musician Iyanii (real name Ian Oure) is no stranger to going viral.

Born and raised in Mathare slums, he overcame numerous hardships, including dropping out of university due to a lack of school fees, before turning to music full-time.

His breakout hit “Pombe” made waves across Kenya’s airwaves and social platforms, earning him a reputation as a go-to artist for party anthems.

During the lunch, Ruto said Kenya’s young people have rejected tribal politics and outdated leadership approaches, describing them as a generation focused on opportunity, responsibility and nation-building.

Speaking in Kisumu on Monday, the President said the youth no longer want to be treated as mere numbers mobilised during election periods and forgotten afterwards.

“Kenya’s young people have outgrown the tired mathematics of tribe and the small thinking of yesterday’s politics. They refuse to be reduced to numbers on a ballot sheet, activated during campaigns and abandoned thereafter,” Ruto said.

He described young people as a generation in motion, impatient for opportunity, ready for responsibility and determined to build, adding that this reality had informed the government’s decision to roll out a deliberate, structured and nationwide programme to unlock economic opportunities for them.

The President was speaking while presiding over the disbursement of Sh220 million in Nyota business start-up capital to 8,820 beneficiaries from Siaya, Kisumu and Homa Bay counties.

The funds were issued at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu county under the Nyota project, which targets young entrepreneurs with financing, skills development and enterprise support.

Ruto said the programme is designed to empower youth-led businesses, promote self-reliance and accelerate economic inclusion across the country, particularly in regions with high youth unemployment.
