The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has deployed a team of senior officers to Garissa county to engage teachers and assess the situation on the ground following the death of teacher Stephen Vundi Musili.
In a statement on Tuesday, the commission said the security and safety of teachers is being handled within the framework of a multi-agency team comprising key government institutions including the security agencies.
TSC chairman Jamleck Muturi said the approach seeks to safeguard teachers and facilitate teaching and learning in all schools in Kenya.
TSC said the senior team had been dispatched to Garissa to work closely with security agencies and offer necessary support to affected teachers.
“The commission has sent a team of senior officers to Garissa county to engage the teachers and assess the situation on the ground. The team will offer the necessary support required by the affected teachers,” Muturi said.
The commission called on partners, host communities, religious groups and the wider public to support teachers working across the country with dedication and commitment.
“We are calling upon all stakeholders, host communities, religious groups and the entirety of our society to support our teachers who are spread all over the country and continue to offer their services with utmost dedication, courage and commitment to enable our country realise the right to education for all the children of Kenya,” TSC said.
The commission condemned the killing, describing it as a heinous and cowardly act that has not only robbed a young teacher of his life but also undermines the right to education, peace, and security for teachers and learners alike.
Muturi said it takes the safety and security of teachers seriously and will offer all the necessary support to improve the welfare of its employees.
The commission urged teachers to remain calm as the matter receives urgent attention from the multi-agency security team.
“On behalf of the commission and the entire teaching fraternity, we extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr Stephen Vundi Musili, his relatives, colleagues and learners during this moment of profound grief,” he added.
