Police in Bomet County have launched a manhunt for a suspect who fled after allegedly killing his friend in a shocking incident reported Saturday night in Bomet East Subcounty.
According to Bomet East Subcounty Police Commander Michael Singa, officers received a report at around 8 pm from the Assistant Chief of Cheboin Sublocation about a lifeless body found along the Masare-Chepkesui road.
Police rushed to the scene and found the body of a 26-year-old man lying by the roadside.
“Upon arrival, officers found the body of the aged 26 years, lying in a pool of blood. On examination, it was noted that the deceased had sustained a deep cut on the left side of the neck, suspected to have been inflicted using a sharp object believed to be a panga,” Singa said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is a man known to the deceased, and reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident. Police say the motive behind the killing remains unclear, as the two were believed to be friends.
“We are yet to establish what caused the altercation. From what we know so far, the two were friends, and it is not clear where the disagreement arose from,” Singa stated.
The suspect is currently on the run, but police say efforts to apprehend him have been intensified.
“He is still at large, but we are in hot pursuit. We have leads on where he could be hiding, and officers are following up to ensure he is arrested,” the police commander added.
The body of the deceased was later collected from the scene and taken to Longisa Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over rising cases of violent crime among young people in the area. Singa appealed to the youth to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes, noting a worrying trend in serious crimes involving young adults.
“My call to the youth is that they should find alternative ways of solving disputes. We are seeing an increase in such cases, mostly involving people aged between 20 and 28 years. Whether it is stress or idleness, violence is not the solution,” he said.
The killing comes just days after another tragic incident in Bomet County, where a 25-year-old man allegedly killed his 56-year-old father during a dispute over land in Kipsinende village, Konoin Subcounty.
Police say the recent cases point to a growing need for community engagement, conflict resolution, and youth empowerment to curb escalating violence in the region.
Investigations into the latest incident are ongoing as police urge members of the public with information to assist in the arrest of the suspect.
