A middle-aged man was killed on Thursday evening in a case of mob justice at Majengo area in Narok Town, after he was suspected of operating a stolen motorcycle.
Narok Central Sub-county Police Commander Benson Pamba confirmed that the deceased was suspected to be riding a motorcycle that had earlier been reported stolen.
According to police, the motorcycle belonged to Alex Momanyi, who had reported the theft at Narok Police Station.
Following the report, the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Narok held a meeting with boda boda riders to address the rising cases of motorcycle theft in the town.
Pamba said that at around 7.00 pm, members of the public spotted the stolen motorcycle being operated by an unknown man in the Majengo area.
The suspect was confronted by the crowd and subjected to mob justice.
Police officers from Narok Police Station rushed to the scene after receiving the report and managed to rescue the suspect.
However, by the time they intervened, the man had already sustained severe injuries after being beaten and set on fire by the mob.
He was rushed to Narok County Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
His body was later transferred to the hospital mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem examination.
During the rescue, members of the public turned violent and pelted stones at the two police officers, injuring them. The officers were treated at the hospital and later discharged.
Police condemned the incident, warning residents against taking the law into their own hands and urging them to report crimes to authorities and allow the justice system to handle suspects.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
