The stage is set for a hotly contested by-election in Isiolo South Constituency following the commencement of candidate clearance by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The by-election was occasioned by the death of area MP Bidu Mohamed Tubi in November last year.
On Thursday, the IEBC cleared United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate Tubi Mohamed Tubi, the son of the late legislator, to contest for the seat. The clearance exercise was conducted at Garbatulla High School in Garbatulla Town.
Speaking after his clearance, Tubi said his decision to vie was inspired by a desire to carry forward his father’s legacy of service, leadership and commitment to the people of Isiolo South. He pledged to prioritise development, unity and inclusive representation if elected.
His candidature has received endorsement from local elders, a development that has further heightened political interest and competition ahead of the by-election.
The UDA candidate was accompanied by Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo, former governor Godana Doyo and former Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) chief executive Halake Waqo, among other senior county leaders.
Governor Guyo urged residents of Isiolo South to remain united and to turn out in large numbers to support Tubi Mohamed at the ballot.
“Let us support Tubi Mohamed Tubi as we collectively work towards sustained progress and inclusive development for our constituency,” the governor said.
The by-election is shaping up to take on a family dimension after the late MP’s daughter, Bina Mohamed, was also expected to present her nomination papers to the commission later in the day. She is seeking to contest the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.
Meanwhile, former Kinna MCA Issack Abduba Fayo is scheduled to appear before the IEBC on Friday to present his papers for clearance.
Tubi Bidu Mohamed has passed away on November 12, 2025.
The National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula announced that Tubi died while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital.
Tubi was serving his first term in Parliament, where he sat in the Departmental Committee on Environment, Forestry and Mining, as well as the Public Petitions Committee.
Before joining the National Assembly, he served as the inaugural Speaker of the Isiolo County Assembly, a position he held until 2017.
Speaker Wetang’ula described the late legislator as a dedicated public servant who made a positive impact on the nation, calling on Members of Parliament and Kenyans to remember him for his remarkable service.
