Wetang’ula acknowledged Kenya’s long-standing cordial relations with Germany, grounded in mutual respect and development cooperation.

Speaking at Parliament Buildings during talks with members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the German Federal Parliament, led by Deputy Committee Member Derya Turk-Nachbaur, the Speaker expressed concern over rising immigration-related violations in different parts of the world.

He described some practices as inhumane and contrary to international norms.

“Kenya urges Germany to use its influential voice within the European Union to champion coordinated, humane and sustainable migration responses across Europe and beyond, in the interest of global order,” Wetang’ula said.

He stressed the need for urgent global dialogue on peace and stability, noting that parliaments play a critical role in shaping immigration frameworks that promote stability.

Wetang’ula also called for the accelerated implementation of the Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement between Kenya and Germany, which came into force in September 2024.

He said the agreement is key to facilitating structured employment opportunities for skilled Kenyan professionals while addressing Germany’s labour market needs.

The Speaker also highlighted the importance of strengthening parliamentary diplomacy between the two countries, saying it would enhance cooperation in education, technology, agriculture, security, and trade, while deepening bilateral and multilateral relations.

On global conflicts, Wetang’ula condemned the situation in Gaza and urged Germany to speak out against what he described as atrocities.

He also criticised immigration enforcement practices in the United States, saying they undermine human dignity.

In response, Turk-Nachbaur described Kenya as a regional economic anchor and a key player in regional stability, citing its constitutional framework, political institutions, and devolution model.

The meeting was also attended by members of Kenya’s Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence and Foreign Relations, led by Belgut MP Nelson Koech, who called for continued collaboration on security and foreign affairs.

Other MPs urged deeper engagement to enable the exchange of legislative experiences and best practice
