Harriet Akinyi, a restaurant owner in Nakuru, recently became an overnight sensation after a video of her weeping in her empty eatery went viral on TikTok.
The emotional footage resonated with thousands of Kenyans, turning her struggling business into a bustling destination almost overnight.
In an exclusive phone interview with journalist Moses Sagwe from Mpasho, Akinyi opened up about the raw desperation that led her to film that moment.

A Final Act of Desperation
For many viewers, the video looked like a plea for customers. However, Akinyi revealed that her mental state at the time was much darker.
She described herself as being "veeery very depressed" before she decided to hit the record button. She explained that the video was never intended to be a marketing ploy. Instead, she wanted to leave behind a record of her struggles.
“Before hitting record, I was very depressed generally. I was just recording to put as evidence so that if I may have died, people will see the reason why,” Akinyi told Mpasho.
She also revealed that everything she recorded and shared was not planned in any way.
“Ididn’t plan it, I didn’t think about it, it just happened out of a moment of desperation, and God helped.”
Overwhelmed by Support
The response to her vulnerability has been staggering. Since the video gained traction, Akinyi has barely had time to look after herself.
She mentioned that she had been surviving on tea and had not eaten a proper meal for days because of the sheer volume of visitors.

People are now travelling from all corners of the country to support her Nakuru-based business. Her phone has not stopped ringing either. Akinyi noted that her network has been struggling because as soon as she finishes one call, hundreds more are waiting.
During her interview, Akinyi noted that while she is on a single call, there are often 900 other callers trying to get through.

Why She Isn’t Hiring Yet
Despite the sudden influx of customers, Akinyi is not rushing to expand her team. While some might expect her to hire more staff immediately to handle the demand, she is taking a more calculated approach to business.
She explained that she is currently using the money paid by new customers to buy the food they are eating. She believes in letting a business grow naturally rather than making impulsive decisions based on a single viral moment.
“You don’t add employees when there are no customers. I can’t work illogically like that; I must work with logistics,” she stated.
Akinyi maintains that she needs to wait for steady working capital and consistent customer numbers before she can safely increase her staff count.
A New Perspective on Business
The massive wave of support from the TikTok community has fundamentally changed how Akinyi views the risks of starting a business in Kenya.
Previously discouraged by the silence in her shop, she now feels a renewed sense of hope.
She told the reporter that her perspective has shifted entirely. She credited the turnaround to her faith and the kindness of strangers.
“I believe in humanity and the fact that God has come through,” she concluded.
