The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has cautioned Kenyans, political actors, and media outlets against circulating unverified claims regarding the road accident that claimed the life of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.
DCI warned that such commentary risks prejudicing ongoing investigations and inflaming public anxiety.
In a statement on Wednesday, DCI said a comprehensive inquiry into the December 13, 2025, crash at Karai along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway was underway.
The agency confirmed that once complete, the file would be presented to the Director of Public Prosecutions for further action.
According to investigators, the inquiry has included a wide-ranging review of evidence and statements from multiple individuals.
The DCI disclosed that 28 people have recorded statements to date, among them seven passengers who survived the crash and presented themselves to assist detectives.
Also interviewed were senior political figures.
The couple visited the accident scene on the day of the crash and facilitated the transfer of Jirongo’s remains from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home.
Post-mortem findings indicated multiple internal injuries, including crush chest trauma, a fractured sternum, and lacerations to the heart, liver, and kidneys.
The pathologist concluded that the cause of death was blunt force trauma.
The DCI emphasised that investigators were proceeding based on verified facts and lawful procedure, urging restraint from parties advancing speculative narratives or attributing wrongdoing to individuals without evidence.
“The DCI urges media houses, members of the public, and political leaders to refrain from making unsubstantiated statements that may prejudice ongoing investigations, cause unnecessary public anxiety, or unfairly injure the character of individuals who have cooperated with investigators,” the agency stated.
The DCI said it remained committed to conducting impartial and expeditious investigations in line with legal standards.
On January 6, DCI said that
preliminary findings into the death of the former Cabinet minister and veteran politician indicated that the incident was a road traffic accident, with no evidence so far pointing to foul play.Investigators were deployed immediately after the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
DCI added that a multi-agency team was constituted to handle the case.
According to the DCI, the team comprised homicide detectives, experts from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic specialists from the National Forensic Laboratory.
The investigators visited and processed the scene, secured and preserved exhibits, and documented physical evidence.
The detectives also recovered CCTV footage from an Egol petrol station near the scene, which is undergoing forensic review.
In addition, the bus manifest and amateur videos captured at the scene were obtained and subjected to analysis.
