President William Ruto on Tuesday held a meeting at State House, Nairobi, with chairpersons and committee members representing several Nairobi County markets to discuss ongoing government investments in market infrastructure, credit access and waste management.
The delegation included officials from markets on Kangundo Road, Wakulima, Muthurwa, Burma, Kangemi, City Park, Othaya Market (Woodley–Jamuhuri), Kawangware and Gikomba Market.
The President said the government was committed to delivering on its pledge to improve conditions for traders, particularly small-scale vendors.
“We are delivering on our promise to traders, including mama mboga, by building 450 modern markets across the country,” Ruto said.
The President said that the Hustler Fund was providing affordable credit to traders to tame exploitation by shylocks.

According to the President, eight of the facilities are currently under construction, while seven have been awarded tenders or are at the procurement stage.
Power and water supply issues affecting markets were raised by the officials, with the meeting agreeing on measures to resolve recurrent disruptions.
Waste and garbage management also featured prominently.
“We are working with the county government to comprehensively and effectively deal with waste and garbage management in a plan to be rolled out shortly,” Ruto noted.
