Kisii Sports Club members celebrate after lifting the Western Captains League title/ANGWENYI GICHANA
Kisii Golf Club has vowed to defend its Western Captains League crown when the competition resumes in February.
Club captain Adrian Monari said the team is well-prepared to retain the title and sent a strong message to rival clubs.
“I want to warn other clubs that Kisii is more than prepared to retain our title,” Monari said on Saturday night at Kisii Sports Club after the league’s grand finale. Kisii emerged as overall winners, with Kericho Golf Club in second place and Nandi Golf Club finishing third. Kericho had won the inaugural edition of the league.
Kisii collected a trophy and Sh50,000, runners-up Kericho received Sh30,000, and Nandi pocketed Sh20,000, courtesy of sponsor Guardmart Supermarket. Other participating clubs include Nyanza, Kakamega, and Eldoret Golf Clubs.
Western Captains League chairman Griffin Owino described the league, founded in 2024, as a game-changer for golf in the region. Sponsorship from Kengen will enhance league operations and increase prize money. Owino added that Kisii, Kericho, Eldoret, and Kakamega have also secured tournament sponsorships from the Central Bank of Kenya, while Guardmart will sponsor events in Kericho and Kakamega.
The grand finale, played in stroke play format, featured 58 golfers. Highlights included a rare hole-in-one by Kisii greenskeeper Andrew Nyanusi, who received Sh20,000 from Guardmart founder Rodgers Moturi.
Meanwhile, Kitale Golf Club was unanimously admitted into the league during the AGM, becoming the seventh club to participate.
At Nyanza Golf Club, Raju Bhayani won the January Monthly Mug with 64 nett. Other winners included Lillian Kongani (Division A, 72 nett), Nicholas Odhiambo (Division B, 65 nett), Sam Onyango (Division C, 69 nett), and juniors Vincent Juma and Melody Ushuhuda with 69 nett each.
With expansion and growing sponsorship, the Western Captains League is set to become a premier platform for golf talent, and Kisii is determined to defend its title in 2026.
