The Chairperson of the African Union Commission has commended the conduct of Uganda’s presidential elections and congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election.

In a statement issued in Addis Ababa on January 17, 2026, the AU Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, praised the electoral process following the polls held on January 15, 2026.

President Museveni was declared the winner after securing 71.61 per cent of the votes cast.

The African Union said the elections reflected an important democratic exercise for the country. The Chairperson noted that the process demonstrated Uganda’s continued engagement with constitutional governance and electoral practice.

The statement also acknowledged the role played by the continental and regional election observation mission.

The Chairperson expressed “sincere appreciation” to Goodluck Jonathan, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his “sterling leadership” of the Joint African Union, Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Election Observation Mission to Uganda.

According to the AU, the observation mission was deployed to assess the conduct of the elections and engage with key stakeholders during the electoral period. The mission brought together institutions from across the continent and the region.

The Chairperson further reaffirmed the African Union Commission’s commitment to democratic governance across Africa. He said the Commission would continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening democracy and effective governance on the continent.

At the same time, the AU applauded Ugandans for their participation in the electoral process. The Chairperson praised the people of Uganda for their “commitment to consolidating democratic gains, peace, security, and development.”

The statement emphasised that democratic stability remains a key pillar of the African Union’s agenda.

The Commission noted that credible elections and citizen participation are essential for long-term peace and development in member states.

The announcement was issued by the African Union Commission’s Information and Communication Directorate, based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The AU said it remains engaged with Uganda and other member states in promoting democratic values, stability and institutional governance.

The statement adds to ongoing regional and international reactions following the conclusion of Uganda’s presidential election, which returned President Museveni to office.
