More than 30 Al-Shabaab militants were killed on Thursday during a joint security operation near the Bulunagaad Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region, Somali authorities said.

The operation was carried out by the Somali National Army (SNA) in coordination with the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and international partners, with support from air assets.

In a statement, the joint forces said the operation involved multiple engagements with Al-Shabaab fighters following an earlier attack on SNA and AUSSOM troops.

“Through coordinated ground and air offensives, over 30 Al-Shabaab militants were put out of action, while several others sustained injuries,” the statement said.

According to the security agencies, the militants had launched attacks on pursuing forces after being dislodged from coastal towns, including Gendershe and areas along the Jilib–Marka axis, during ongoing SNA-led operations codenamed Operation Hidden Sword.

“The SNA, AUSSOM and partners acted swiftly and decisively to neutralise terrorist threats targeting security forces and civilians in the area,” the statement added.

The joint forces reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding civilians and ensuring stability in the region.

“We remain committed to protecting civilian lives, maintaining security, and ensuring the safe movement of humanitarian assistance and logistics supplies to local communities,” the statement said.

Security officials said operations will continue to degrade Al-Shabaab’s operational capabilities as part of broader efforts to promote lasting peace and stability across Somalia.
