KCB head coach Robert Matano has expressed a firm belief in his side’s ability to overpower Nairobi United when the two FKF Premier League sides clash at Moi Stadium, Kasarani, on Thursday, insisting that recent performances point to an imminent upturn in results.
The bankers are seventh on 22 points, just two ahead of Nairobi United, who sit 11th with 20 points but hold three games in hand, adding extra edge to a fixture that could reshape ambitions for both camps. KCB head into the Kasarani encounter encouraged by their last outing, despite settling for a goalless draw against Police FC.
Matano felt the scoreline masked a dominant display, particularly in terms of possession, structure, and chance creation. “We dominated the game against Police FC, controlled possession from start to finish and created enough chances to win comfortably,” Matano said.
“The result did not reflect our work rate. Our structure was excellent, the movement was sharp, and the only thing missing was the final touch, which we have worked on in training.”
The Kasarani surface is expected to play a key role, with KCB comfortable in conditions that often unsettle opponents. Matano believes familiarity with the pitch and surroundings will allow his side to manage the game more effectively.
“This is our home away from home,” he said. “We understand the pitch, we know how to manage games here, and the boys feel comfortable. In tight matches like this, those small details make a big difference.”
KCB’s attacking threat has been boosted by the return of Fortune Omoto, who made his first appearance of the season against Police FC following a long injury layoff.
His pace and directness are expected to trouble defences as he regains full match sharpness. “Omoto gives us another dimension,” Matano said. “He stretches defences, attacks space well, brings energy and plays without fear. You saw glimpses of that against the police, and he will only get better as we manage his minutes carefully.”
The bankers have received a further shot in the arm after securing the signature of experienced midfielder Francis Kahata, a battle-hardened campaigner whose pedigree spans record Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC, and Kenyan Premier League defending champions Police FC, adding leadership, composure, and top-flight know-how to KCB’s engine room.
Nairobi United arrive in Kasarani eager to respond after a 2-0 defeat to league leaders AFC Leopards at Nyayo Stadium last Sunday. While the result was damaging, the technical bench believes it offered valuable lessons. “We were punished by small mistakes,” said Nairobi United technical director Salim Ali.
“We played well in spells and competed, but at this level, errors are costly. We have reviewed the match, and the players' response has been positive. They are hungry and want to show character.”
United have further reinforced their squad with the signings of Steve Biko Omollo from Kariobangi Sharks and Ugandan international Titus Ssematimba from NEC United, moves Ali believes will immediately improve balance and competition. “Biko understands the league and brings experience and leadership,” Ali said.
“He improves our balance. Titus gives us pace; he is direct, aggressive, and fits our philosophy. Competition for places has increased, and that is exactly what we wanted.”
Thursday’s contest is expected to be decided in midfield, with both sides prioritising structure, transitions, and game management. KCB will look to control tempo, while Nairobi United aim to press and disrupt rhythm.
“We must be compact, move the ball quickly and exploit transitions,” Matano said. “We cannot rush. We have studied Nairobi United, we know their strengths and weaknesses, and we must be intelligent.”
