Action between Mwamba and Kisii Rugby in the KRU Championship/ANGWENYI GICHANA

The KRU Championship resumes on Saturday from the festive season break, with the United States International University-Africa hosting Mwamba Rugby.

USIU-A Martials remain winless in three games and are seeking their maiden win against Paul Murunga’s charges.

In an interview, USIU-A Martials coach Tom Lagat said he expects a tough, physical contest against a very competitive Mwamba side.

“From our side, we are focused on delivering a more composed and disciplined performance, especially at home and putting ourselves in a position to get a positive result,” said Lagat.

Lagat said they have been boosted by the return of three key players who were injured in the opening home game.

The three Paul Kituyi, Derrick Bissaso, and Livingstone Abok, he said, will boost the team in terms of depth, experience, and balance.

Coach Lagat said they did not sign any new players during the mid-season transfer window. “Our model mainly depends on incoming freshmen.

Each intake allows us to identify and integrate rugby players. When we are fortunate to find quality talent, we bring them through our system. That approach remains central to how we build our squad,” he remarked.

The Coast region derby between South Coast Pirates and Mombasa will be the highlight of match day four of the second-tier league.

Tony Kadhambi, the South Coast Pirates, said: “Being a derby, it will be a difficult and tough game. I feel like we will have an edge over them to win the game,” said the coach.

In other games, log leaders, Catholic University of East Africa’s Catholic Monks face University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine, seeking to maintain their unbeaten run.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Cougars will host newcomers National Youth Service (NYS) Spades in Juja, while Western Bulls host Kisii RFC at the Bull Ring in Kakamega.

Catholic Monks, Kisii RFC, South Coast Pirates and JKUAT Cougars are the only unbeaten sides in the league so far. Mombasa RFC and USIU-A Martials are the only teams that have yet to win so far.
