National Super League outfit Soy United coach Jeffers Odongo has shifted his focus to the upcoming clash against promotion-chasing Mombasa United after his side opened the year with a home victory.
Soy United edged visitors Equity Bank 2-1 at the Eldoret Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) grounds, with Eric Namasaka scoring a brace. Rashid Moyo netted the Bankers’ consolation goal.
“We are going for maximum points. We have a good record at home, and a win will lift us into the top 10 position,” said Odongo. The coach, however, praised his players for their display against Equity Bank, noting that they dominated both halves.
“The boys played well and were sharp throughout the game. We scored a goal in each half and deserved the maximum points,” he added. Mombasa United, coached by the experienced Gilbert Selebwa, are yet to register an away win this season.
The victory lifted Soy United to 11th on the log with 18 points, level on points with ninth-placed Nzoia Sugar and 10th-placed Nairobi City Stars, though Soy United have an inferior goal difference.
Darajani Gogo are 12th, also on 18 points. Elsewhere, newcomers Gucha Stars earned a crucial point after holding Darajani Gogo to a barren draw at Marist University in Karen.
Darajani Gogo were without head coach Andrew Ongwae, who recently left to join SportPesa Premier League side Shabana as second assistant coach. William Oricho has since taken over as interim coach of the Kibera-based side. Gucha Stars remain 15th on the table with 15 points from 12 matches.
Coach Sammy Okoth confirmed plans to strengthen the squad during the mid-season transfer window, which opened on Monday. “We didn’t have an opportunity to reinforce the team at the start of the season, but we have now identified players who will join us in this window,” said Okoth. On Friday, former FKF Premier League side FC Talanta will host Mully Children’s Family (MCF) at Ruaraka Grounds.
