
Property of unknown value was destroyed when a fire broke out at an electronics store along Luthuli Avenue in Nairobi on Tuesday evening.
The blaze quickly spread to neighbouring stores, damaging mobile phones, televisions, laptops, and refrigerators.
Firefighters worked overnight to contain the fire, prompting authorities to switch off power in the area for safety reasons.
Police reported that some shops not affected by the fire were targeted by looters.
Officers were called to the scene late at night to intervene.
On Wednesday, a larger section of Luthuli Avenue was temporarily blocked to prevent further looting.
This allowed shop owners to evacuate remaining goods under the supervision of armed and anti-riot police.
Firefighters remained at the scene on Wednesday as smoke continued to rise from some stores.
Central Police Commander in Nairobi, Stephen Nyakombo, said the cause of the fire is under investigation and confirmed that no injuries were reported.
In Meru, a separate fire destroyed several houses occupied by prison warders at Meru Main Prison.
The blaze, which began on the night of Tuesday, January 6, spread to six semi-permanent structures.
Authorities said prison officers at the scene managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further.
Those affected lost property of unknown value and have temporarily relocated within the prison compound.
Police said experts have been involved in investigating the incident, and no injuries were reported.
In Kisii, a fire destroyed two shops, with no injuries reported, while police in Kikuyu monitored a forest fire in the area. Local officials joined efforts to contain its spread.
Authorities across the affected regions continue to investigate the causes of the fires.
