A section of leaders has expressed concern over an incident on Saturday during a burial ceremony in Murang’a County, where Lamu Woman Representative Muthoni Marubu was heckled and subsequently escorted out.

Marubu had attended the burial service of Alice Gakuya, the mother of Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, at Makomboki Primary School grounds in Kigumo, Murang’a.

She was accompanied by other politicians when some attendees interrupted her speech, which included remarks about her political support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

Security personnel subsequently escorted her from the venue.

Minority Whip and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo condemned the incident, emphasising that violence against women is unacceptable.

“I strongly condemn the physical attack on Hon. Muthoni for expressing her political preference. Violence, especially against women, is cowardly,” she said.

Nominated UDA Senator Veronicah Maina also criticised the disruption, calling for clear distancing from any acts of intimidation.

“This kind of behaviour is regrettable and has no place in a mature democracy,” she said.

Former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria claimed he left the event after learning of a potential confrontation targeting individuals perceived to hold differing political views.

During the incident, senators Joe Nyutu (Murang’a) and John Methu (Nyandarua) intervened to assist Marubu before police officers escorted her to safety.

In a post on Facebook following the incident, Marubu confirmed her safety, stating, “I am safe.”
