Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen/MINA

The government has declared parts of Narok County as security disturbed and dangerous, invoking emergency policing powers for 30 days.

In a special issue of the Kenya Gazette dated December 19, 2025, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen said the declaration was made under section 106 (1) of the National Police Service Act, following consultations with the National Security Council.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (1) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, has made a declaration on 19th December, 2025 declaring parts of Narok County as security disturbed and dangerous," the notice read.

The notice lists affected areas in Trans Mara West and Transmara South subcounties.

They include Nkaroru in Trans Mara West, and in Transmara South: Oldonyo-Orok, Siteti, Ololoma, Comer, Ratiki, Isokon, Kerinkani, Kondamet, Olkiloriti, Angata Barakoi, Kapkeres, Lolgotian Town and Mashangwa.

According to the Gazette notice, the declaration took effect at 6pm on December 19 and will remain in force for an initial period of 30 days.

It may be withdrawn or extended by further notice from the Cabinet Secretary.

The designation empowers the National Police Service to enforce enhanced security operations aimed at restoring order in troubled zones.

Section 106 of the Act allows the state to respond to imminent threats to peace, public safety or national security by declaring security disturbed areas to facilitate rapid deployment and special measures.

The Gazette did not detail the specific triggers for the declaration. However, recent months have seen sporadic violence, cattle rustling incidents and heightened tensions linked to land and resource disputes in parts of the South Rift.

The 30-day period lapses on January 18, 2026 unless extended.

Earlier on, Murkomen issued similar directives affecting various areas in Marsabit County.

The areas listed as disturbed and dangerous in the region include: Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania, Hillo Irress Abamartille and Hillo Gootu.

Other areas include Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray, Hillo Hudda, Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee and Hillo Godde Haroressa.

Murkomen said the declaration will take effect on December 23, 2025, from 6.30pm, for 30 days.

The extension signals continued government concern over insecurity in northern Kenya.

Parts of Marsabit have experienced recurring armed attacks linked to banditry and clan conflict.

The ministry has deployed additional security units in recent months in efforts to stabilise the region and restore peace.
