In a move that carries political weight and symbolic resonance, Isiolo’s immediate former governor, Mohamed Kuti, has publicly endorsed his successor Abdi Guyo’s bid for a second term.
The endorsement, delivered with characteristic calm and measured rhetoric, reaffirms Kuti’s enduring influence in the county’s political landscape and highlights his continued role as a statesman rather than an active partisan player.
Speaking during a family reunion in Garbatula, Kuti employed parables to underscore his message.
He urged the people to “hold with a tight grip the leadership in your possession,” a statement widely interpreted as a call to safeguard the current administration and maintain continuity in governance.
He emphasised that sustained leadership under capable stewardship is often the most reliable path to development.
In a subtle but pointed message, Kuti also addressed his withdrawal from frontline politics, saying leadership succession is not abandonment, but a deliberate transfer of trust to a worthy successor.
His endorsement was framed not as a personal political manoeuvre, but as a deliberate act of mentorship and guidance, signalling confidence in Governor Guyo’s preparedness to lead.
Kuti explained that his decision was informed by careful observation and mentorship over the years, expressing confidence in Guyo’s abilities, asserting that he “only gave the people a man who deserved it”.
The endorsement was met with support from key county leaders, including Isiolo Women representative Mumina Bonaya, Isiolo North MP Samal Lomwa, former Isiolo South MP Abdi Koropu and county assembly speaker Abdullahi Banticha, all of whom have publicly aligned themselves with Governor Guyo’s re-election bid.
Their backing reinforces a narrative of unity around continuity and experienced leadership in Isiolo.
This also follows closely after the first governor, Godana Doyo, switched allegiance to join Guyo’s camp, in a bid for Senator in the 2027 general election.
The move signals a broader political realignment in Isiolo ahead of the polls.
Guyo faces tough competition from leaders who have expressed interest in unseating him.
They include Abdul Ali—who is also theformer Isiolo South MP, Sports Principal Secretary Nuh Mohamed, Senator Fatuma Dullo and former EACC boss Twalib Mbarak.
All aspirants will face the Borana council of elders, which will vet and nominate a candidate ahead of the 2027 poll.
The contest promises to be fiercely competitive, with candidates positioning themselves around both experience and new leadership narratives.
Analysts note that the political dynamics in Isiolo are increasingly shaped by endorsements from influential county figures, strategic alliances and the ability of candidates to project a vision for continuity and development.
