Passengers stretched, bought snacks, and hurried to the restroom as the driver ensured the bus was fit enough to continue the journey.

When it was time to leave, he reached for the ignition… only to realise the keys were missing.

At first, the silence was heavy. Then irritation started brewing.

“Kwani sisi tunakuwekea kifunguo?” one passenger shouted.

Another mumbled that they would miss their itineraries.

The driver, sweating, searched every pocket. The conductor emptied his pouch. Meanwhile, impatient passengers began mock investigations.

“Driver, sisi hatuna kifunguo yako,” one woman snapped.

The drama escalated. Families returning home wondered if they would spend Christmas on the tarmac.

After some minutes of chaos, a man casually walked toward the bus, jingling the missing keys. The crowd went silent.

He confessed that he had taken them when rushing to the restroom, fearing the bus would leave without him.

Laughter erupted. A passenger asked loudly, “Wewe mbona unatembea na kifunguo, wewe ni driver?”

The entire bus burst into loud laughter mixed with sighs of relief.

With the crisis resolved, the bus roared back to life and pulled onto the highway.

Some passengers joked that he should take the wheel since he seemed eager to take responsibility.

As they resumed the trip to Nyamira, the earlier anger melted into shared humour.

It became another unusual Christmas story — sure to be narrated for years to come.
