Thailand launches air strikes against Cambodia as fresh border clashes kill one

The Royal Thai Army says it has launched air attacks along its disputed border with Cambodia, following deadly clashes.

Thailand said one of its soldiers was killed and eight others injured after troops came under Cambodian fire on Monday morning.

Cambodia claims the attack was launched by Thailand and says they did not retaliate.

Clashes have been reported in Thailand's north-eastern Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani provinces, as well as Cambodia's northern border provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey.

Both countries have accused one another of breaching a ceasefire agreement that was brokered by Malaysia and US President Donald Trump.

A fierce border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia had erupted into a five-day war in July, killing at least 48 people and displacing an estimated 300,000.

 The Thai military has released footage of what it says was a Cambodian mortar strike this morning.

Both sides have accused each other of firing heavy weaponry over the border

Tens of thousands of people in Thailand and Cambodia have been asked to evacuate as a new wave of fighting erupted between the South East Asian neighbours.

This is the most serious confrontation between Thailand and Cambodia since they signed a ceasefire in July, following five days of fighting which killed dozens of soldiers and civilians.

The South East Asian neighbours agreed to the ceasefire after pressure from US President Donald Trump, who claimed he ended the conflict. However, both countries have continued to accuse each other of violating it.

Their historic differences over where the border lies remain unresolved.
