Google has released its Year in Search 2025 for Kenya, highlighting the topics, people, and ideas that captured the nation’s attention.

Among the standout trends were not only political figures and athletes but also words and phrases reflecting a deeper curiosity among Kenyans about meaning, culture, and global events.

At the top of the trending meanings list was “Enigma.” The term, which refers to a mysterious or inexplicable person or event, was frequently associated with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Following his death on October 15, Kenyans used the word to describe his complex political manoeuvres, his ability to remain a central figure despite setbacks, and his knack for forming unexpected alliances.

The second most searched meaning was for the term “Jowi,” also linked to Raila Odinga. Although the exact interpretation varies, it reflects a cultural and political curiosity about figures who dominate the public imagination.

Other trending meanings included “Conclave,” commonly used in political or religious contexts to describe private meetings or assemblies, and “Demure,” a word Kenyans searched to understand nuances of modesty or reserved behaviour, often in discussions around public personalities.

Another notable entry was “Kubant,” a term that gained traction in social media discussions, while “Habemus Papam”—Latin for “We have a Pope”—saw spikes in searches following global religious events.

The year also saw interest in health and wellness, with “Ayurvedic” trending as Kenyans explored alternative medicine practices from India.

“Wantam” emerged as a term linked to opposition debates about President William Ruto’s time in office, reflecting claims that he might serve only one term.

Historical and astronomical events drew attention too, with “Saba Saba”—the date marking significant protests and national events—and “Blood Moon,” a rare lunar phenomenon, attracting widespread searches.

The diversity of Kenya’s trending searches shows a population engaged not only with politics and sports but also with culture, language, and curiosity about the world.

“This year’s trending meanings reflect the nation’s search for identity, explanation, and connection,” Google said in its release.

Google’s Year in Search provides an annual snapshot of what Kenyans are thinking, questioning, and trying to understand. From political enigmas to cosmic phenomena, the lists reveal a society eager to make sense of both local and global events.
