ODM Party candidate Moses Omondi has called on residents of Ugunja Constituency to turn up in larger numbers to vote, as today’s by-election kicked off with low voter turnout across several polling stations.

Speaking after casting his ballot, Omondi thanked the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for what he described as efficient preparation and timely deployment of polling materials and staff.

He noted that officials arrived as early as last night to set up for the exercise. Omondi also commended Ugunja residents for maintaining peace both during and after campaigns, saying the calm environment was key as the constituency elects its second Member of Parliament.

However, he expressed concern over the low number of voters seen in the morning hours, a trend he said was common in by-elections but still worrying.

“The turnout generally is low. This is normal in by-elections, but I want to urge those who haven’t made it to the polling stations to do so before the closure of this important exercise,” he said.

The ODM candidate further noted that some polling agents had not yet reported to their assigned stations, urging them to arrive promptly to observe and safeguard the process.

Omondi also appealed to security officers to remain alert amid reports that some individuals were allegedly attempting to influence voters through handouts.

He urged the public to stay vigilant and report any such cases to ensure the exercise remains free and fair.

“With close to 60,000 registered voters in Ugunja, the numbers might not even reach half if people are not mobilized to come out,” he cautioned.

He added, “All of us will only be happy when the exercise ends peacefully and when as many voters as possible turn out to cast their ballots.”

He encouraged residents to speak to neighbours and family members who had not yet voted, reminding them that participating in the by-election is both a right and a civic duty.

Omondi is among the 10 candidates that were cleared by IEBC. They include Benson Obol Otieno (United Green Movement Party), Eric Ofiro (Jubilee Party), Vincent Olengo (Kenya Moja), Fredrick Ochiel (United Democratic Movement), Oliver Ochieng (National Liberal Party), Lilian Akinyi (National Alliance Party), Orodi Odhiambo (Wiper), Maurice Okumu (Liberal Party of Kenya), and Chrispine Budo (Kanu).
