The message — a prayer and show of affection toward the president — was interpreted by many as political praise rather than a neutral expression of faith. For a nation mourning and divided, the post appeared ill-timed and tone-deaf.

Within hours, hundreds of fans flooded her comments section, expressing disappointment and anger. Some accused Wema of “turning her back on the people,” while others said she had “chosen power over compassion.”

Criticism from Fans and Celebrities

Kenyan actress Jacky Vike was among those who voiced disapproval, writing:

''Smh… HE WHO ALLOWS OPPRESSION, SHARES THE CRIME!!! My condolences to the families that lost their loved ones, Poleni sana, may all the Heroes that died fighting for Tanzania Rest in peace. ''

Kenyan influencer Sandra Dacha commented ,'' ''YOU ARE A TOTAL SHAME TO THE PEOPLE OF TANZANIA!? My condolences to the bereaved? Mungu awape nguvu jamani majirani zetu?? we are all bleeding with you?.''

''Ndio maana awezi skia kitu anapost tu?? imagine wazazi wangapi wanalia kupoteza wanao kwa uyu muuwaji anae mwita nambari moja .''@sabina_musenya added .

''How can you be celebrating & raining praises where there's blood cry perpetrated by the person you're praising? Only a heartless person will build happiness on another person's tears.'' @ preciouskipenya added .

The uproar reflects a growing frustration among fans who feel Tanzanian entertainers have failed to show empathy during a national crisis.

Growing Backlash Against Artists

Wema’s criticism comes as part of a wider backlash facing Tanzanian artists who publicly endorsed President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) ahead of the October 29, 2025 election.

In the months leading up to the polls, major stars including Diamond Platnumz, Harmonize, and Zuchu openly rallied behind Samia, urging fans to vote for her and praising her leadership.

Diamond described the president as a “hard-working leader” and appeared at several CCM campaign events, while Harmonize said he was “praying for her victory.”

However, these endorsements coincided with growing public discontent over the political process and limited opposition participation. Many fans viewed the artists’ support as aligning with power rather than with the people.

The fallout has been swift and measurable. Diamond Platnumz reportedly lost more than 100,000 Instagram followers ever since he  public endorsed president Samia Suluhu  while Harmonize’s follower count also dropped sharply. Critics accuse the musicians of “abandoning their fan base” in favor of political gain.
