Nondies' assistant coach Moses Wanyaga will take charge of his first tournament, the Impala floodlights, next month after taking over from Oliver Cullum.
Wanyaga, who has served as assistant coach to Cullum for the last three seasons, will also be in charge of the upcoming 2025/26 Kenya Cup season, which starts in November.
Former KCB backs coach and player, Darwin Mukidza, joins Nondies' technical bench in the same capacity. He brings a wealth of experience to the Jamhuri-based club, a fresh perspective and a winning edge, having won five Kenya Cup titles with KCB
In an interview, Wanyaga said the goal was to improve their strength and conditioning and basic core skills. "We have done six weeks of pre-season, considering one of the challenges we had this season was fitness and conditioning levels.
"This time, we want to make sure we sustain our intensity levels from the first game of the season to the last day as well as improve our basic core skills, including the catch, pass, kick, attack and defence,” added Wanyaga.
Nondies is one of the country's most decorated rugby clubs with 17 Kenya Cup titles and 25 Enterprise Cup titles. KCB have lost the last two Kenya Cup semifinals to Kabras 45-6, 37-9, and the tactician is upbeat about his team's chances this season.
“To come from the championship and make it to the semis is no mean feat and a credit to the team. We will take it one game at a time for the upcoming season and hopefully advance to the final,” added Wanyaga.
Wanyaga expects a competitive Kenya Cup season with champion Kabras, KCB, and Oilers tipped for the top honours, with Strathmore Leos and Nakuru the dark horses.
“The top three remain the same. Strathmore have recruited well and have a good coach in Wills Ojal. Their performance in Sevens will inspire them to glory while Nakuru have shown glimpses of form at the tail end of last season,” noted Wanyaga.
On the upcoming Impala Floodlit, Wanyaga said the tournament will be key in assessing three clubs' structure and depth ahead of the Kenya Cup season. “We want to build towards the new season, but if we win, it will be a bonus."
