final / HANDOUTKCB interim Sevens coach Andrew Amonde believes they must improve their kick-off reception ahead of this weekend's season-ending Dala Sevens in Kisumu.
Amonde steered the side to win the fourth consecutive Kabeberi Sevens last weekend, beating Daystar Falcons 20-10 in the final.
“Our kick off was not 100 per cent. We struggled against Nakuru (in the pool stage) and, to a lesser extent, against Kabras in the semis. We need to craft a winning formula in the final tournament,” observed Amonde.
"There are a few tactical plays we are working on in training this week just to stay ahead of the chasing pack. I know Dala will be a tough battle, especially mentally. The boys know they are in touching distance (of the title), but we stay level-headed,” added Amonde.
KCB top the standings with 104 points, with Strathmore, who lost 12-10 to Daystar in the semis, are second on 95.
The students lost 24-12 to Kabras in the bronze medal match.
The bankers have been the most consistent side in the circuit, winning the season-opening Driftwood Sevens (beating Strathmore 15-14), losing in the Prinsloo final (24-7 to Strathmore), beating Menengai Oilers to the Christie Sevens title (19-5) and beating Strathmore 31-21 to win the Embu edition.
Amonde said a big squad has helped mitigate injuries and fatigue in the six-week championship.
"One of our biggest strengths has been our big squad. We can navigate the challenge of injury and fatigue, especially when travelling, and that has kept us refreshed,” he said.
KCB need 14 points to reclaim the national title they last won in 2023.
They headline Pool 'C' alongside Homeboyz, Mwamba and Embu RFC.
“It's a tricky pool," Amonde observed. "Homeboyz have come of age despite playing in the second tier, while Mwamba are competitive. Embu will want to prove a point."
Dala Sevens defending champions, Kabras, headline Pool 'A' and face Catholic University Monks, MMUST and Nakuru RFC.
Daystar Falcons lead Pool 'B', where they will face Quins, Nondies and Mombasa Sports Club.
Strathmore Leos have a date with Menengai Oilers, Impala and hosts Kisumu RFC in Pool 'D'.
