Over 400 teachers are set to feature in the Teachers' Sports Day set for Saturday at the Kerugoya Stadium.
What began as a local event for educators in Kirinyaga County has now grown into a national interest. This year's event will be run under the theme “Beyond the Chalk.”
The Sports Day is a collaboration between Athletics Kenya (AK), Kirinyaga region, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) – Kirinyaga branch and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
AK Central region chairman and National treasurer, David Miano, revealed that the one-day event has interested a wide range of participants. “So far, over 400 teachers have registered for this one-day event," Miano said.
The main aim of the event is to empower educators by promoting teamwork, talent and the spirit of sportsmanship in the workplace.
The initiative also aims to expose and equip young teachers with hands-on experience that can help them become better trainers and mentors within their schools. Participants will compete in a wide range of sporting disciplines, including volleyball, athletics, darts, netball and football.
Miano noted that the event has so far grown into one of the country's biggest events for educators. “This event was initially intended for teachers within Kirinyaga, but it has since attracted participants from other regions across the country,” he said.
