The Ministry of Health has revoked internship placements for 306 Bachelor of Science Nursing pre-interns who were found unqualified in the ongoing review of the 2025/2026 cohort postings.

Health CS Aden Duale said the affected individuals had not yet graduated and were therefore ineligible for posting.

This comes after a review of the 2,098 pre-interns listed on July 1, 2025. The ministry confirmed that 42 internship offers had already been revoked earlier, on July 21.

Universities most affected include Baraton University with 92 cases, Kirinyaga University with 46, and Pwani University with 48.

Some universities also had placements revoked. These include Kenyatta University (22 revoked), Daystar University (7), Methodist University (3) and UMMA University (2).

“The posting offers for 306 BSc nurses have been revoked, in addition to the 42 previously revoked on July 21, 2025,” Duale said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Ministry further announced that another 316 eligible BSc Nursing pre-interns had been left out of the original list by mistake.

The candidates had met all requirements and are now cleared for internship placement.

The 316 pre-interns have been directed to collect their internship offer letters in person on Friday, August 1, 2025, starting at 7 am at Afya House, Ministry of Health Headquarters in Nairobi.

Duale said the letters will only be issued upon presentation of a valid national identity card.

“The Ministry remains committed to upholding integrity, fairness, and transparency in internship placements.”

He thanked stakeholders and candidates for their patience, understanding, cooperation, and continued trust in the government’s processes.

On July 21, 2025, Duale suspended the Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing Council of Kenya, Lister Onsongo, due to an alleged unlawful submission of 42 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing students for internship before the completion of their academic programmes.

The CS appointed the Director of Standards and Compliance, Ann Mukuna, to take over the operations of the Council until further notice.

“The Ministry of Health has uncovered a serious breach of regulations involving the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and 10 Public and Private Universities. We have noted the unlawful submission of 42 Bachelor of Science (BSc) Nursing students for internship before the completion of their academic programmes,” Duale said.

“This action is in direct contravention of the Nursing Council Act and the guidelines approved by the Public Service Commission (PSC)."

Duale said all individuals found culpable—whether at the Ministry of Health, the NCK, or within the leadership of the implicated universities—will be held fully accountable.
