Content creator Nasra Yusuf is known for her humour, her honesty, and now, her unexpected dislike for rice.

“I can cook,” she says. “But please, don’t serve me rice. I don’t like eating it, and I know it is unexpected of me as a person coming from a Somali background.”

It’s a surprising confession coming from someone of Somali heritage, where rice is often central to home cooking and celebratory meals.

Still, Naz is used to breaking expectations. Despite her growing online popularity, she leads a simple and grounded life.

“I cry at least once a month,” she says with a soft laugh. “Not because I’m sad, but because I’m proud I haven’t given up.”

She speaks fondly of her upbringing in Mukuru kwa Njenga, a prominent Nairobi neighborhood. Her first job was selling Airtel SIM cards, which lasted for only two days.

“I just knew it wasn’t for me,” she admits. “I was to earn on commission, and walk around with the lines,” she says. I just returned them as it was exhausting and least promising.

Even her best friend, she says, is “someone you’ve never heard of.” And when she’s stressed, she texts and calls her sister — a steady support system away from the public eye.

Her Google searches swing from 70s fashion inspiration to beginner investment tips. She loves to cook ugali, meat, and kales as she steers clear of rice.

She also emphasizes the pursuit of education as she mentioned she would be resuming campus later this year September.
