Spotify’s global initiative, EQUAL, last week hosted a special event in Nairobi aimed at empowering Kenyan female artistes with vital skills to thrive in the competitive music industry.
The event brought together a host of women in music for a day of training and mentorship, featuring sessions on Spotify for Artists tools, media engagement, financial literacy, and pre-release strategies.
The goal was to equip participants with practical knowledge that will help them advance their careers in an industry where women have often been underrepresented.
EQUAL, a flagship Spotify program, champions women in music through education, inspiration, and networking opportunities, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to equity in the industry.
Speaking exclusively to journalist Kalondu Musyimi, Jodie Tabisher, Spotify’s Artist and Label Partnership Manager, emphasized the platform’s ongoing efforts to bridge gender gaps in music.
“We have seen that women are underrepresented and we are doing the best we can to bridge the gap. We are providing women with opportunities for themselves and their careers,” said Tabisher.
She noted that the program’s reception in Kenya and across the continent has been overwhelmingly positive. Through EQUAL, Spotify selects a monthly female ambassador who receives increased visibility through social media, editorial placements, communications support, and participation in curated events.
“We make events that empower women and try as much as possible to include women in everything we do,” Tabisher added, noting that any female artiste is welcome to join the EQUAL platform.
Looking ahead, Spotify plans to expand EQUAL’s reach and impact alongside the growth of the music industry. “We want to keep growing even as the industry grows and increase opportunities for women,” she said.
EQUAL continues to cement Spotify’s role as a driver of gender equity in music, not just through streaming, but through meaningful, on-the-ground initiatives designed to create lasting change.
