Ugandan music luminary Bebe Cool, one of East Africa's most prominent celebrities, recently sat down for an exclusive discussion about his musical journey and the meaning behind his new music album, Break The Chains.
Speaking with Dennis Milimo of Mpasho, the artist revealed that his new album consists of 16 tracks and he perceives it as a gamechanger in his over 30 years in music.
The Genesis of 'Break The Chains'
Bebe Cool revealed that the album's title originated from a period of personal frustration and a desire for change. He explained feeling in the same place despite working hard, attributing this stagnation to repeatedly doing the same things while expecting different results.
“The name comes from the pain that I have had for quite some time. I've been feeling like you know, I'm in the same place, I keep working hard, working so hard, but I'm in the same place."
"Why am I in the same place? It's because I keep doing the same thing over and over and the pain comes because I keep expecting a different result, but yet I'm doing the same thing?” he contemplated while crafting the album title.
The message of 'Break The Chains' extends significantly to the East African music industry. Bebe Cool noted that East African artists were once ahead of many other African countries but subsequently stuck there and backslid.
He stressed the importance of breaking the mentality and mindset of being content with local success.
"I did music the same way for over 30 years...us as East African artists, we were way ahead of so many countries in Africa. True. But there came a time we just stuck there and backslid."
"So unless if you break that mentality that mindset that you know just because you you're doing songs that are liked by Kenyans you should stay comfortable. No, you can do the songs that are like by Kenyans, but you can target the globe. Yeah. So, we need to break that chain. So, that's why I called it break the chain," he asserted, highlighting the need to transcend regional comfort zones.

Crafting a 16-Track Masterpiece
The creation of 'Break The Chains' was a meticulous process, spanning approximately one and a half years. The album began with a pool of around 50 songs, which were carefully curated down to 25, and finally to the 16 tracks featured on the album.
Bebe Cool collaborated with a diverse team of writers from Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa. He openly champions the use of songwriters in the industry, viewing it as a legitimate business that creates jobs and combats the "local mentality" that artists are weak for seeking external writing assistance.
Among the 16 tracks, two hold particular personal significance for Bebe Cool: "Home" and "Hidden Agendas".
"Home" explores the universal human need for a specific person to confide in, a person who makes you feel "at home" regardless of circumstances. "Hidden Agendas," on the other hand, delves into the pervasive issue of trust in relationships, acknowledging that "95% we always get shocked by people who surround us" due to concealed motives.
