Prison officials in Costa Rica caught an unlikely suspect attempting to smuggle drugs behind bars last week.
The Costa Rican Ministry of Justice said in a social media post that guards at the Pococi Penitentiary captured a black and white cat climbing over its fence last Tuesday night with about 236 grams of marijuana and about 68 grams of heroin strapped to its back.
Officials believe the cat was deployed in an apparent attempt to smuggle the drugs to prisoners inside.
According to a video posted online by the country’s Ministry of Justice, prison guards caught the cat while it was climbing atop a chain link fence with barbed wire attached to it.

“An officer stationed at one of the forts spotted the animal in the green zone and immediately raised the alarm,” the ministry said in a statement, according to an English translation by BBC.
“Thanks to the swift actions of the responding officers, the cat was caught and the packages removed, preventing them from reaching their final destination,” the Costa Rican Ministry of Justice added.
According to BBC, the Costa Rican prison officials handed the cat over to the National Animal Health Service for an evaluation after the drugs were cut off the back of its body.
Video posted to social media showed prison officials using scissors to cut the package from the cat’s fur.
In total, officials found the two packages of marijuana and heroin, as well as sheets of paper used for wrapping drugs, per the ministry's statement.
Officials say they are reviewing security footage to try and trace the cat's movements prior to being detected by prison guards in an attempt to figure out who tried to smuggle the drugs into the prison and to whom they were intended.

Animals being used to smuggle drugs is quite a common phenomenon in most South American countries.
According to a past study carried out by Crime Insights, drug smugglers usually use animals like cats, Pigeons, cattle, mice, and even snakes to execute their plans.
