Gor Mahia head coach Sinisa Mihic wants his charges to capitalise on upcoming matches to bolster their aspirations of tucking away a record 22nd Kenyan Premier League title.
With two pivotal home fixtures on the horizon, Mihic believes that K’Ogalo can leverage these opportunities to ascend to the summit of the league table.
The upcoming match against KCB at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday serves as a defining moment in their pursuit of league glory.
In an interview on Thursday, Mihic’s confidence was palpable as he emphasised the need for maximum points to close the gap on the league leaders, Kenya Police.
The law enforcers are atop the log with 48 points, five more than K’Ogalo, who threw away a chance to close the gap after sharing the spoils with AFC Leopards in their last game.
“We had hoped to secure maximum points in our match against AFC Leopards, but only managed to get one point,” Mihic reflected.
“Our goal is to defeat KCB and get closer to Kenya Police,” he continued. Following the clash with KCB, Gor Mahia will face Sofapaka in an away tie at Dandora Stadium, a match that promises to test their mettle after a taxing encounter against Bandari in the FKF Cup Round of 16.
The subsequent home fixtures against FC Talanta and Mara Sugar later in the month are critical junctures in their campaign.
“Collecting points from our remaining matches is paramount,” Mihic stated, outlining a clear vision for the team’s trajectory.
Mihic highlighted the team’s ongoing struggles with finishing in front of the goal, a long-standing issue.
“This is a problem I found, but that is why I am here,” he remarked, acknowledging the historical context of the team’s struggles.
He emphasised the importance of investing in skilled attackers, noting that successful teams spend considerably on strikers and wingers to enhance offensive capabilities.
Mihic said the absence of star striker Benson Omala, who previously topped the KPL scoring charts, has dealt a significant blow to Gor Mahia’s ambitions.
Omala’s departure to Safa SC of Lebanon and subsequent return to Kenya, coupled with the uncertainty surrounding his International Transfer Certificate (ITC), has left a void that the team has yet to fill.
“Players like Omala are missing from this squad. A real striker who will score easily and not miss so many chances,” Mihic lamented, highlighting the critical role that the prolific scorer could play in the team’s success.
His concerns, however, extend beyond the confines of Gor Mahia, pointing out that finishing remains a pervasive issue across the league, with many players rushing their attempts at goal.
