
A mourner died and 24 others were injured in an accident on their way to collect a body from a mortuary in Suba South constituency in Homa Bay county.
The members of Malongo Catholic Church were going to pick the body of Rose Odhiambo.
Raphael Obondo, 68, died on the spot after the driver lost control of their vehicle.
The Tuesday evening accident happened as the mourners headed to Suba Subcounty Hospital mortuary to collect the body.
The pickup van carried 25 passengers.
They had covered about one kilometre when the vehicle overturned and rolled.
Survivor Nicholas Ochieng’ said the driver lost control while trying to negotiate a corner.
“The vehicle rolled down after the driver lost control as most of us remained unconscious. I was a bit stable and began rescuing those who sustained serious injuries,” he said.
Speaking at the subcounty hospital where they were taken for treatment, Ochieng’ said they suspected the vehicle developed a mechanical problem.
In the accident, 16 passengers suffered serious injuries while nine others had minor cuts.
Those who with serious injuries were admitted as the others were treated and discharged.
Malongo assistant chief Boniface Sakwenda said some of the injured persons were referred to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.
“Medical officers said some of the accident victims had been transferred to Homa Bay for specialised treatment. We wish them a quick recovery,” Sakwenda said.
Suba South subcounty police commander Caxton Ndunda urged road users to abide by traffic rules.
“Let road users abide by traffic rules whenever they are using our roads. This will help to prevent accidents,” he said.
The family of deceased collected the body for burial on Wednesday
