Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia has proposed that the National Assembly should mediate the issues between President William Ruto and his deputy Rigathi Gachagua.
Quoting former United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Kaguchia said the road to diplomacy may appear complicated and frustrating but progress to it requires both vision and courage, to undertake the journey.
Acknowledging this, Kaguchia said there is need to reconcile the two to avoid further division over disagreements.
“Honorable speaker I am of the opinion that when the two most senior gentlemen in this republic having such kind of a disagreement or a misunderstanding, we should seek the way of reconciliation,” he said.
Kaguchia was addressing the House during the debate on the proposed impeachment of the DP.
He said the House was too busy following the issue of impeachment and forgetting to pursue “a very important goal in this – reconciliation”.
He stated that in the past, Kenya has had diplomats chair mediation between the top leaders.
He went on to list Koffi Anan, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and US Senator Chris Coon.
Kaguchia warned that if the motion goes through, the country may open “pandora’s box”, bringing about many impeachment cases.
“When we open the Pandora’s Box impeachment, we are going to be opening something that we cannot contain. We are likely to have more impeachments coming to this House,” he said.
Minority Leader Junet Mohamed however disagreed with the proposition, saying the matter before the House is not a disagreement of anyone.
He noted that it is a motion tabled by Kibwezi West Mwengi Mutuse with 11 grounds of removal from office.
“We are discussing a motion that contains 11 grounds. We are not discussing the disagreement with anyone, with his wife, children, uncles. We are not discussing those things,” Junet said.
Gachagua is facing charges related to economic crimes, ethnic discrimination and gross violation of the constitution.
The impeachment charges against him, he argues, are politically motivated, alluding to his fallout with President Ruto that has publicly played out in the past five months.
President Ruto has yet to publicly comment on the matter.
